New Diagnosis
Welcome and congratulations on the birth, or expected birth, of your baby!
We know that receiving a Down syndrome diagnosis can bring with it an abundance of feelings: love, fear, joy, sadness and confusion. All of these feelings are valid and we are here to walk this journey with you.
Expectant Parents
You may have just received some very unexpected news, but you are not alone! There is no right or wrong way to receive and process a prenatal diagnosis. We all come from unique life experiences and backgrounds. Please know that whatever you may be feeling, it is ok. At DSNMC, we have a team of experienced parents ready to listen to your concerns and offer up-to-date information about Down syndrome. Our First Call volunteers are here to listen without judgment, allowing you the space to share freely. We hope to give you a realistic picture of raising a child with Down syndrome, while discussing both joys and challenges we have personally experienced.
If you would like to connect with a First Call parent, please email Kristi Maeng or call 301-979-1112.
New Parents
Congratulations, once again, on the birth of your new baby! Receiving a diagnosis of Down syndrome may bring with it a whirlwind of emotions. But, please know that you are not alone! DSNMC has been supporting and encouraging families since 1986 in Montgomery county and the surrounding areas. As a new parent of a baby with Down syndrome, you may find yourself with a number of questions. We encourage you to reach out to our First Call program which is made up of parent volunteers who have been trained with up-to-date information, have walked their own journey, and are ready to be a listening ear.
If you are interested in hearing from a First Call volunteer, please reach out to Kristi Maeng or 301-979-1112.
New Family Outreach Opportunities
Welcome Bags
DSNMC has created Welcome Bags that include books and information on Down syndrome, local resources, and gifts for your baby. To request a Welcome Bag, email newfamilies@dsnmc.org or call 301-979-1112.
Playgroups
We have playgroups specific to children ages birth - 3 years the first weekend of every month. This is a great opportunity to connect with other parents in our community in a more intimate, in-home setting.
New Family Breakfast
Twice a year, we have New Family Breakfasts. These events are a little larger, and help connect families new to DSNMC. If you are interested in our upcoming gatherings, email newfamilies@dsnmc.org or call 301-979-1112.
